Autorickshaw Union writes to Maha Transport Minister; car loan exemption request, monthly compensation of Rs 10,000

The Autorickshaw Union on Wednesday demanded a full waiver of vehicle loans from rickshaw operators in Maharashtra and Mumbai. Apart from this, they also charge Rs 10,000 per month to survive.

“Some of them are young unemployed people who bought autorickshaws on loan earlier this year after getting permits. They are badly affected and we have also demanded a welfare program for all drivers,” said Shashank Rao, president of Mumbai Autorickshaw Taximen’s Union.

On Wednesday, the FPJ published a detailed article on the current problems of taxi and rickshaw drivers in the city of Mumbai, where the Autorickshaw Union has requested financial assistance from the state’s transport minister.

“More than 15 lakh autorickshaws operate in the state of Maharashtra including Mumbai. Besides Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and BEST, these autorickshaw drivers provide transportation service to passengers in Mumbai as well as across Maharashtra” , says the letter written by Shashank Rao, to Anil Parab, Minister of Transport of Maharashtra.

“Including fares, all the terms and conditions of using the rickshaws are decided by the government of Maharashtra. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the daily income of these rickshaw drivers has drastically decreased. As a result, most of the rickshaw drivers are on the brink of depression now, therefore on behalf of all rickshaw operators in Maharashtra including Mumbai, I request you to consider our request in priority,” says the letter again.

“Most of the rickshaw drivers have gone into debt due to the drastic drop in daily income due. We therefore call on the government to pay them Rs 10,000 per month for their survival until the pandemic continues,” Rao told the FPJ on Wednesday, adding that they have been demanding enough financial aid for rickshaw drivers since April 2020.
