A mother in Philadelphia has given birth to what is believed to be the world’s first Tesla baby: a baby born in the front seat of an electric smart car as it rode on autopilot.

The remarkable childbirth, reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, took place in September as Yiran Sherry, 33, and her husband Keating Sherry, 34, took their three-year-old son Rafa to kindergarten.

Yiran Sherry’s waters broke as the family got stuck in traffic. As the contractions rapidly increased and the traffic barely moved, the couple realized they weren’t going to arrive on time.

Keating Sherry put the vehicle on autopilot after setting the navigation system to the hospital, 20 minutes away, in the western suburbs of Paoli.

He said he gently put a hand on the steering wheel of the car as he looked after his wife.

“She was squeezing my hand to the point where I thought she was going to break it,” Keating Sherry told the Inquirer. “I was [saying] “Yiran, okay, focus on your breathing. It was also a tip for myself. My adrenaline was skyrocketing.

Yiran Sherry said the decision to try to wait until they give birth until they reach the hospital was agonizing. However, she said, she kept looking at their estimated time of arrival and saw that she was barely moving.

“Should I push or should I hold?” Should I push or should I hold? Damn, let’s go, ”she recalls, telling herself, according to People magazine.

She gave birth to her daughter when they arrived at the hospital, whispering, “Oh, my God, Keating. She is out.”

Nurses cut the baby’s umbilical cord in the front seat of the car.

Keating Sherry said: “Once the pediatrician said, ‘She’s healthy, congratulations,’ it was a sigh of relief.”

Once at the hospital, Yiran said, nurses kept coming to his room to see “baby Tesla.”

“[They would ask] “Did you deliver the baby in the car?” “,” Said Yiran Sherry.

The couple named their daughter Maeve Lily, after briefly considering Tess, in tribute to the automaker.

“Thanks to the engineering engineers at Tesla for your brilliant autopilot design,” said Keating Sherry.

The delivery of the baby is good news for Tesla, which has been plagued by bad publicity regarding safety concerns and abuse in the workplace.

This week, a taxi company in Paris stopped using Tesla Model 3 cars after a fatal accident. Tesla had previously been the subject of a lawsuit in Florida over an accident involving the death of a teenager in a Model S in 2019.

Co-founded by the world’s richest man, PayPal and SpaceX entrepreneur Elon Musk, the company was ordered in October to pay $ 137 million in damages to a black employee who suffered racist abuse. Tesla also faces allegations of sexual assault from many women.

Tesla did not immediately respond to the Guardian’s request for comment.
