Boris Johnson is due to hold a press conference this afternoon as No 10 insisted that England’s current Plan B restrictions are the “right course of action” to tackle the omicron variant.
No 10 admitted the NHS faces a ‘difficult time’ over the coming week with rising Covid infections, but said they ‘see no data to suggest further restrictions would be the right approach “.
Commenting on the Plan B restrictions, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson said: “We think this is the right course of action, asking people to work from home, use of the Covid pass and of course, most important, the recall program.
“We know it is important to find the right balance between protecting lives and livelihoods.”
The spokesperson admitted that the NHS had seen a significant increase in admissions in recent days, but said it was “pleasant” that the number of patients requiring ventilation had not increased to the same extent.
“We know that admissions and occupancy are increasing dramatically right now – we’re not seeing the same leap in beds requiring ventilation, which is nice, and almost certainly depending on both the nature of omicron and of our successful recall program, ”he said. noted.
“We don’t see these huge waves in cases translating into those in need of the most serious care we have seen perhaps in previous waves, but it still puts the NHS under significant pressure.”
