NEW YORK (CBSNew York) – When carpooling first appeared years ago, it promised more affordable and fairer journeys. But now, as the demand for rides increases, CBS2 wanted to check out the most cost-effective ways to get around.
CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon put taxis and carpools to the test on Tuesday.

Driving the streets of Manhattan can be hectic and expensive. As the kilometers accumulate, so do the prices.
Therefore, when deciding whether to take a taxi or use a carpooling to get around, it is tempting to choose the cheapest option.
“I think carpooling is cheaper. Just from experience, ”said Linda Mirenda.
“I would say Uber is cheaper, yes,” another person said.
For many people, the perception is that ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft are the cheapest choices.
CBS2 put it through an unscientific test, taking it five laps in Manhattan that same afternoon.
Dhillon first researched the rides on Uber and Lyft and recorded the advertised prices before hailing a cab.
The results might shock you.
She found that with no tips or extra charges, hailing a cab was always cheaper than a standard UberX or Lyft.
Taxi prices were on average 35 to 83% lower than for carpooling. Prices for the same trips on the CURB taxi app varied.
“Yeah, I don’t think we should call an Uber anymore!” One person said.
“For a long time, no one looked after the yellow taxis. It was Uber, Uber and Lyft so I think it’s great for the owners of yellow cabs to get their business back, ”said Mirenda.

But business isn’t fully picking up, and many struggling taxi drivers want passengers to know that when you hail a cab, the prices don’t change.
“When there is rush hour, rain or snow, their prices go up, but the yellow cab is always the same,” said a taxi driver.
In response to the price discrepancies, Lyft said the CBS2 pilot shortage was to blame.
The company added, “As the vaccines rolled out and people started moving again, we started to see the demand for rides exceed the number of available drivers. We have added thousands of drivers to the platform and expect passenger wait times and prices to improve in the future. For drivers, this continues to be a good time to drive with drivers from major markets earning a lot more than they were before the pandemic. “
Lyft said passengers can also opt for a longer wait time in exchange for a lower fare.
Meanwhile, Uber said, in 2018 New York City set a minimum pay standard for app-based car services, which drove prices up.
The company added in a statement, “By law, Uber drivers in New York City are granted a standard minimum wage of over $ 25 an hour, paid time off, and perks such as telemedicine, to which no taxi driver is entitled.
For many consumers, the amenities offered by carpooling are extremely tempting.
“I don’t mind paying a slightly higher price, but now you say it’s a lot higher, so I think it’s ridiculous,” said Lindsay Klein.
But now some say they could just hail a cab instead.
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission said taxi drivers must be affiliated with a workers’ compensation policy, adding that they can also join a group insurance fund that could provide fringe benefits or purchase individual workers’ compensation insurance.
In a statement, he added, “Taxis and app-based businesses have different pricing mechanisms. The iconic yellow and green taxis use metered fares, continue to offer consistent fares, and are a reliable source of transportation throughout New York City.
