HCMC brainstorms solutions to resolve taxi issues at Tan Son Nhat Airport

HCM City Transportation Department requested Southern Airports Authority (SAA) to arrange parking lots for buses to enter the airport to transport passengers from Tan Son Nhat Airport to the downtown and other places.

During a meeting of HCM city’s steering committee for Covid-19 prevention and control and economic recovery on February 17, HCMC’s transportation department said that Tan Son Nhat Airport and SAA, as a supervisor, must take responsibility for the chaos at the airport.

Passengers complain of having to wait a long time for a taxi and the fares are abnormally high.

HCM city transport department deputy director Bui Hoa An said the responsibility of the department, police, Ta nBinh and traffic inspectors is to work together to prevent traffic jams on nearby roads. of the airport in accordance with inter-agency coordination.

An said passengers cannot take a taxi at TanSonNhat Airport for three reasons.

First, inaccurate forecasts of the number of passengers passing through the airport. The number of passengers skyrocketed after Tet.

Second, traditional taxi companies and online taxis are operating at 50% capacity. Indeed, many taxi drivers left HCM City for their hometown during the peak of the pandemic and did not return to the city or find other jobs.

Third, the airport car parks cannot meet the requirements if the number of passengers increases sharply.

An predicted domestic travel demand to drop 10% from the 15th day of the first lunar month.

At the meeting, the transportation department asked SAA to provide bus parking areas so that buses could enter the airport to pick up passengers.

According to An, there are two bus lines, one connecting Tan Son Nhat airport to the city center and the other to Vung Tau city. However, the bus parking area was at the international terminal. Due to Covid-19, the international terminal receives few passengers, so the buses on the lines have suspended their operation.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers soared during the Tet holiday, especially from the third to fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year.

Previously on February 6, Tan Son Nhat Airport served more than 100,000 passengers, which exceeded the capacity of taxi companies. As a result, many people had to wait hours for taxis.

The number of passengers in domestic terminals fell after February 15.

On February 17, the number of arrivals was 41,000, while the number of departures was 24,000. The number of passengers arriving at Tan Son Nhat decreased by 10,000 compared to February 15 (54,000) and the February 16 (53,000), and 21,000 compared to February 14.
