The Namibian Bus and Taxi Association said on Sunday that the envisaged 15% increase in bus and taxi fares, which would have been effective from today, will not be carried out.

In a statement yesterday that contradicts its mid-October press release in which the Transportation Owners Association announced an increase, Nabta informed all drivers that bus and taxi fares will remain at N $ 12. , and in accordance with current fares for long-distance routes.

On October 21, Acting President Jeffrey Platt said in a statement that the association’s national executive committee had met and agreed to a 15% tariff increase due to rising fuel prices, food and many other products.

“We have already written a letter to the ministry. We are not asking for their permission, we are only informing the ministry, ”he then declared.

In yesterday’s statement, Nabta General Secretary Pendapala Nakathingo said: “As a result, Nabta will inform the public immediately after the government takes action on our request to increase bus and taxi fares.

It should also be noted that Nabta’s decision to put its earlier decision to increase bus and taxi fares on November 1, 2021 to a halt does not mean that bus and taxi owners and drivers are not suffering, but we do it as a responsible and recognized association to avoid unnecessary chaos in the country while fighting so that the entire taxi industry can get the fare increase it deserves.

Taxi drivers have been warned not to charge passengers more than usual until further notice. However, customers are advised to respect their drivers in the same way they pay for other services. “Ndinapo (I only have N $ 10) must die,” the statement read.

Nabta also wants to inform drivers that the planned price increase will only be applicable to drivers with a passenger license.

“No private vehicle will be allowed to transport passengers for remuneration without a passenger transport permit, for the protection of buses and taxis. “
