We’re heading to Oxford along the A40 for today’s video in our Near Miss of the Day feature in which the cyclist strongly suspects he’s been the victim of a ‘punishment card’ from a taxi driver who overtook him very closely. while driving in the bus lane.
Tom, the road.cc reader who sent us the clip – the close pass itself is about 55 seconds into the video – told us: “The next pass happened on June 20, driving towards Oxford /Headington along the A40.
“There is a shared path to the left of the road but at this time of the morning it’s families walking to school, as I’m driving at around 20/22mph I prefer to continue on the carriageway.
“In this case, I am in the bus lane, which is also reserved for bicycles and taxis. Here you can see a very close pass of a taxi driver also honking his horn as he goes.
“It makes me think it’s a punishment pass, why I’m not sure. I guess it’s because they think I shouldn’t be in the bus lane, which is weird because it there is a repeating blue sign for the bus lane with a picture of a bus, bicycle and taxi.
“I have already reported to the police and filed a complaint with the taxi company (clearly visible on the side of the vehicle) and got the following response:
Thank you all for noting that this has been passed on to the driver and our transport manager. Our fleet is allowed to use the reserved bus lanes, a safe distance must be observed by all road users and we will respond to this.
“Infuriating,” said Tom, who added, “I reported this to the police as soon as I got back on the 20th.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 – Why are we making this feature film and what have we learned from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported literally hundreds of close passes and near-misses involving misbehaving vehicles from all over the country – so many, in fact, that we decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature. on the site. . One day, hopefully, we’ll run out of close passes and near misses to report, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling.
If you have filmed an uncomfortable close encounter with another road user that you would like to share with the wider cycling community, please send it to us at information [at] route.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, otherwise we may add any footage you provide to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won’t show up in searches).
Please also let us know if you contacted the police and, if so, what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the driver of the vehicle if it was a bus, truck or van with company marks, etc.
