Newburgh shootout on North Miller Street kills taxi driver


CITY OF NEWBURGH – Police are investigating the shooting death of a taxi driver who was apparently killed in a robbery Thursday night.

Newburgh City Police said it appears Jorge Arbayza De La Cruz was shot dead by a group of men who robbed him and left him on the street around 8:40 p.m.

Officers responded to 144 N. Miller St. for a gunshot report and found Arbayza De La Cruz on the ground in front of his taxi, unconscious and unconscious. The Newburgh resident, 51, was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Arbayza De La Cruz was driving an Express USA cab, which was seen with bullet holes on North Miller Street, between Farrington Street and South Street.

No one at Express USA Taxi was immediately available for comment.

Police encourage anyone with information about the incident to call their detectives at 845-569-7509. They are investigating with state police, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
