This is the moment a taxi driver in Worcester was racially abused as he sat at a taxi rank in the city.
A series of shocking videos show two men wearing hoodies attacking a taxi driver, who cannot be seen on the video and who remains in his car throughout.
The shocking images have been called ‘disgusting’ and ‘horrific’ with claims that taxis should be fitted with panic buttons.
The two men can be seen trying to open the door of the taxi before punching, kicking and head-butting the car.
They hurl a series of racist insults at the taxi driver and threaten him with violence.
Captured by the camera, the ordeal lasts several minutes before the two men end up walking away.
Worcester News understands the incident has been reported to police and has asked West Mercia Police for comment.
Haris Saleem of the Worcester Taxi Drivers Association said: “I am at a loss for words. This video is disgusting, horrifying and terrifying.
“For something like this to happen in the city center, a driver assaulted like this and racially abused. It’s shocking.
“It’s not always reported, but things like this happen quite regularly. If a driver is alone or has been out of town, you don’t know what he’s been through.
“We all get these kinds of remarks or abuse, but we try to ignore it.”
Mr Saleem said he thought the driver was fine apart from being shaken up.
“I thought the driver – besides being terrified – did a great job,” he said. “The temptation may be to get out and try to defend himself or his vehicle, but it could have been much worse if he had gotten out of the car.”
Mr Saleem suggested that taxis should be fitted with panic buttons, allowing them to call for police assistance quickly and discreetly if the driver feels in danger.
“It’s our livelihood, we’re out there serving the community and we need protection.”
