Most couples about to get married would likely choose a fancy wedding car to transport them between venues, but one woman in Singapore took a less conventional route.

Kavitha D/O Palaniappan instead went with the ComfortDelGro taxi that her father, Palaniappan S/O Arumugam, had been driving for 19 years.

The father drove a taxi to support the family

Kavitha shared that her father’s job as a taxi driver had been the family’s main source of income during her and her brother’s growing years.

“My dad managed to get my brother and I through polytechnic by faithfully driving the cab almost every day,” she said.

Although Palaniappan is already 73, he still remains behind the wheel and refuses to retire because he “likes driving a taxi too much”.

Using Palaniappan’s taxi as a bridal car is therefore Kavitha’s way of honoring and showing her appreciation for the hard work and sweat her father put in to support herself and her family.

Father also drove the wedding car

Kavitha’s mother then brought up the innovative idea to Palaniappan ahead of Kavitha’s wedding in November 2021.

He was apparently so keen on the idea that he went ahead to ask ComfortDelGro for permission to use the vehicle, two days before the wedding.

The company gave its clearance “without hesitation” and even helped Palaniappan get approval from the authorities the same day.

Palaniappan was also her daughter’s driver on the wedding day.

It turned out to be a happy turn of events as they experienced heavy traffic when they drove to the wedding reception.

But with Palaniappan’s “extensive driving experience”, he was able to navigate the vehicles and send Kavathi to the scene in time.
