Police arrested a 16-year-old who allegedly drove a taxi after a three-year-old was killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Cape Town.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said police from Muizenberg arrived to find the child had died.

He said earlier:

Upon arrival, they found the body of a three-year-old being run over by a white Toyota Quantum. The victim was declared dead on the spot by medical staff. The driver of the involved vehicle has fled and has not yet been arrested.

Muizenberg police are investigating a culpable homicide case.

The accused was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon and had already appeared in Muizenberg Magistrates’ Court for manslaughter, Swartbooi said.

Ward Councilor Mandy Marr said authorities “were still getting to the bottom of” what had happened.

According to Marr, the vehicle involved in the accident was a taxi. Marr added that she would meet with the local taxi association on Wednesday to try to shed light on the circumstances of the crash.

She added that the driver appeared to have driven onto the sidewalk, where the child was run over.

“The roads in Vrygrond are extremely narrow and during the holiday season many children play in the streets. We need to be careful with our children and discourage drink driving,” said Marr.
