Transport month gets off to a rough start with two dead and several injured in road crashes around Durban


DURBAN – KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala officially kicked off Transport Month in Chesterville on Sunday, but the month got off to a rough start after several road accidents in and around Durban over the weekend.

On Sunday, two people were injured when a vehicle crashed into a house in Waterloo.

“Locals contacted the South African Response Unit (Rusa) after investigating a loud bang and found the vehicle stuck against a house,” Rusa spokesman Prem Balram said.

He said the driver and two other people fled. Two other people were treated for injuries and rushed to hospital.

Emer-G-Med reported that a driver was killed when his vehicle crashed into a residential perimeter wall on Saturday on Kenneth Kaunda Road in Durban North.

“The driver of the vehicle was assessed by paramedics and found to have suffered fatal injuries.

He was declared dead on arrival, “spokesman Kyle van Reenen said.

In another accident, a person was injured when a vehicle overturned on the M4 Ruth First Highway.

“The driver was assessed and stabilized on site before being transported to hospital by ambulance for further treatment,” Van Reenen said.

In Osindisweni, north of Durban, 13 people were injured when a minibus taxi overturned and rolled over an embankment several times.

Rusa said the injured were treated on site before being rushed to hospitals for further treatment.

On Friday evening, a motorist was seriously injured after losing control of his vehicle on Sydney Road in Umbilo.

A woman was killed on Friday as she attempted to cross the M4 at La Mercy.

Rusa said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene with the driver unharmed.

In all of the above incidents, the police have also visited every scene and are continuing their investigation.
