The Uttar Pradesh tourism department is preparing to launch a helicopter taxi service to connect important destinations across the state. Service is expected to start from December of this year. Given the pandemic when people prefer to avoid traveling on crowded buses and trains, tourism officials believe the chopper taxi might be a good option.
According to Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Senior Secretary of Tourism and Culture, with Agra heliport ready, the process of preparing helipads in other major tourist locations is underway.
The project would be based on the public-private partnership (PPP) model and to find suitable private actors, a consultant would be appointed within two weeks.
âMost tourists, especially foreigners, visit Agra to see the Taj Mahal due to good connectivity, but the same tourists ignore other equally important tourist destinations due to poor connectivity. The helicopter taxi service would prove to be an advantage for these tourists, âhe said.
Official sources said the service will ensure tourists reach destinations and return on the same day.
Besides a helipad near Agra airport, Meshram said the government already has an airport in Vindhyachal, Prayagraj, Lucknow and Varanasi.
According to officials, an Agra-type helipad with basic equipment to manage the service is also under construction in Mathura and Prayagraj.
Likewise, helicopter taxis would also be available for tourists to the Buddhist sites of Bodhgaya and Kushinagar.
