Wireless Charging for Electric Taxis (WiCET) Project Launches with Lumen Freedom Wireless Charging Technology

Lumen Freedom, a leading global manufacturer of Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) systems, announces that effective September 27, 2022, the Wireless Electric Taxi Charging (WiCET) project has been launched using Lumen Freedom WEVC technology.

WiCET is a project funded by the UK Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and carried out by Innovate UK, to assess the commercial and technical viability of deploying wireless charging for Hackney electric cars, with the potential to enable further electrification of transport that reduces emissions and improves air quality.

Five wireless ground assembly systems were installed at the main taxi rank in Nottingham city center (UK), and nine electric carriages were fitted with wireless vehicle assembly systems – five LEVC taxis TX and four Nissan Dynamo taxis.

Lumen Freedom has been working closely with the WiCET project team since early 2021 on the development of WiCET technical requirements, while providing wireless charging hardware evaluation and development for the successful first phase of the project.

Electrifying taxi fleets in congested urban areas is a crucial step in reducing transport emissions and improving air quality. The time it takes taxi drivers to recharge can reduce the driver’s earning potential – wired charging is inconvenient and inconvenient at a taxi rank. Wireless charging offers drivers the ability to charge their vehicle while waiting for their next passengers.

Lumen Freedom General Manager Rod Wilson said, “We are delighted to have been named the wireless charging hardware vendor for the WiCET project and look forward to seeing wireless charging deployed across a wide range of applications, from passenger cars to public transport and emergency vehicles. .”

Richard Sander, WiCET Project Manager and Technical Specialist at Cenex, said: “We are extremely proud to launch the first public trial of wireless taxi charging in the UK. This is an important step in understanding and demonstrating the potential of wireless charging as a foundation technology in the transition to electric vehicles. »

Wireless electric vehicle charging is a simple solution for charging electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, without having to plug in. Efficiency levels of Lumen Freedom WEVC systems are comparable to plug-in or conductive charging systems.
